Power2Sustain and Plastics, Water, Dance and Art

Power2Sustain (and Bagito) were invited to participate in an innovate new production here in Santa Cruz involving plastic, water art and dance -- all in the name of reducing our consumption and reliance on plastics. Children were invited to the Power2Sustain table to see how recycled plastics become a Bagito, and to illustrate on the Bagitos something they learned or a message for our natural word.

Even trash can liners can be found in greener versions thanks to Santa Cruz-based Reusable Solutions Group, which recently launched a line of reusable anti-microbial liners made from post-consumer recycled plastic. (Bonus: proceeds go to local environmental literacy programs for youth.)

Since local nonprofit, Power2Sustain, first launched in 2008 under the name, Bagspeak, founder Mitch Barlas and his team have made large strides in moving toward a more sustainable world for this generation and those to come.

This year Power2Sustain, a Santa Cruz-based non-profit environmental education organization, and Safeway partnered with the County of Santa Clara’s Office of Sustainability, Green Waste Recovery, Inc. and CalRecycle to deliver environmental education programs throughout Santa Clara County. The program reached over 2,000 students in 27 elementary, middle and high schools.

The goal of the program is to empower kids to take action at home, at their school and in the community to preserve and sustain their natural world.

The Power2Sustain project has partnered with the U.S. Embassy and the Ministry of the Environment in Nouakchott, Mauritania, to offer lessons and activities on environmental stewardship and sustainability to 700 school children in the capital city. Mauritania is the first country in Africa to pass a country-wide ban on plastic bags and has taken the lead on educating it's children and citizens on ways that they can be better stewards of their environment.
